Why do we depend on facebook so much?

Facebook, in my opinion, is destroying any mystery or surprise that society has to offer. I do not want to know what you are doing or what your "status" is nor do I care. Do people really believe that they are that important that I want and need to hear a play-by-play of your life? In the dating world, it's an unwanted and unneeded pressure that is constant. I do not understand this craze but perhaps someone can explain it to me
